“Oh my, come in out of the rain, dear.” She stood back. “You’ll catch your death. Come in, come in.”
I stood dripping on her tiled floor while she locked up.
“Whatever happened? What were you doing out there?”
“My car. I got stuck in the floods.”
“On the old road?”
“You should know better than that, Charlotte.” She tutted, but smiled. “Here, give me your coat. You’re soaked through. Who in the world doesn’t have a phone on them these days?”
“I’ve got one, but -”
She didn’t give me time to explain. “I’ll get Leonard to tow you out in the morning. Well? Go on through, you know the way. The fire’s going. And take off those wet clothes.” She turned away. “Tea?”
“That would be -”
“Living room. Now, Charlotte. I’ll bring you some of Samantha’s old clothes.”
I wandered through to the front room. The fire was low, probably lit hours ago, but it was warm. I slipped off my shoes and stood by it, warming myself. Of course I had a phone, but the storm had knocked out the signal. It was a stupid route to take, I knew, but I wasn’t exactly thinking straight. Breaking up with your long term boyfriend will do that to you.
I turned to find Samantha’s mom standing there with her hand out, waiting for me to hand them over.
“I’ll put them through the dryer for you.”
There was no room for argument with Samantha’s mom. I’d known her since Samantha and I got into a fight on our first day at high school. She was the first person who ever dared shout at me, who ever dared do anything to upset me. She didn’t seem to know or care who my parents were. How dare you hurt my daughter, you little bitch? It left me speechless. After that, Samantha and I were inseparable.
Until she went off to college and made new friends, left me behind.
Closing my eyes for a moment to calm my nerves, I started to unbutton my blouse. I could already feel my shoulders tensing, my cheeks getting hot. If I ever had a lesbian fantasy, it was this woman. Her fearsome personality, her height, the way her bottom curved and stood firm beneath riding pants. And now she was here, demanding that I strip for her. My breath came in ragged sighs that did nothing to settle my fluttering stomach.
